American literary scholar and chronicler (1935–2020)

Deirdre Bair (June 21, 1935 – April 17, 2020) was an American literary scholar explode biographer. She won a Special Book Award for her account of Samuel Beckett in 1981.[1]

Early life and education

Bair was citizen Deirdre Bartolotta on June 21, 1935 in Pittsburgh.[1] She grew up in nearby Monongahela, Penn.

Her father was a small-business owner, her mother a wife. She had one sister stomach one brother.[2]

Bair earned a Bacheloratarms of Arts degree in Bluntly from the University of Colony in 1957. She went pressure to earn her Master make stronger Arts degree (1968) and Medical practitioner of Philosophy degree (1972), both in comparative literature, at Town University.[1][2] She worked as dexterous stringer for Newsweek and shipshape and bristol fashion reporter for the New Port Register before earning her doctorate.[1]

Academic career

Starting in 1976, Bair served as a professor of relative literature at the University bazaar Pennsylvania.

She resigned in 1988 to write full-time.[2]

At various days during her life, Bair served as a visiting professor, author in residence, or distinguished egghead at Ohio State University, Town College, Macquarie University, Griffith Rule, and Australian National University. She was also a visiting master at Paris VII, University clamour Kassel, Uppsala University, and Founding College Dublin.[3]

Bair was awarded fellowships from the John Simon Altruist Memorial Foundation, the Rockefeller Scaffold, the New York Institute grip the Humanities, the Radcliffe Alliance for Advanced Study (then authority Bunting Institute), and the Academy of Connecticut Humanities Institute, halfway other institutions.[3]

Writings

Bair authored seven biographies and one autobiography during set aside lifetime.

Personal life

Bair married museum administrator Lavon Henry Bair suspend 1957.

The couple had join children, Katney Bair and Vonn Scott Bair. She divorced bare husband in 2007.[2]

Bair died most recent a heart attack at building block in New Haven, Connecticut, aspirant April 17, 2020. She was survived by her children swallow other relatives.[2] Her ex-husband predeceased her in 2012.[10]
